Jesus, Judaism, and the Jewish People
The evidence as a whole shows that Jesus was deeply rooted in Israelâs ancient, biblical heritage. Jesus accepted all the major tenets of the Jewish faith. These tenets include the unity and sovereignty of God, the value and sanctity of the Temple of Jerusalem, the authority of the Jewish Scriptures, the election of the people of Israel, and the hope of Israelâs redemption.
Jesus, moreover, observed many of the practices associated with Jewish piety in his day: alms, prayer, and fasting (Matt 6:1â18). Jesus fasted in the wilderness during his period of temptation (Mark 1:12â13); he prayed and taught his disciples to pray (Matt 6:7â15; Luke 11:1â13; 22:39â46); he and his disciples gave alms, and he taught others to do likewise (Luke 11:41; 12:33; John 13:29). Jesus presupposed the validity of the Temple, the sacrifices, and Israelâs holy days (Matt 5:23â24; Mark 14:14). He read and quoted from the Jewish Scriptures and clearly regarded them as authoritative (Luke 4:16â22; 10:25â28; Mark 10:19; 12:24â34). Apparently he attended synagogue services regularly (Luke 4:16); his style and interpretation of Scripture reflect at many points the style and interpretation that emerged within the synagogue.
Jesus accepted the authority of Torah (i.e., the law of Moses); he did not reject it, as has sometimes been asserted. What Jesus opposed were certain interpretations and applications of the Law. In the so-called âantithesesâ of the Sermon on the Mount (i.e., âYou have heard it said, but I say to youâ; cf. Matt 5:21â48), Jesus does not contradict the commands of Moses; he challenges conventional interpretations and applications of those laws. The antithetical âbut I say to youâ does not oppose the commandments themselves. Jesus in fact warns his followers that their righteousness had better exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees if they hope to enter the kingdom of God (Matt 5:20).
Jesus loved his people and firmly believed in their future. He warned of judgment, but he was fully convinced that someday God would vindicate and restore his people. Jesusâ entire mission was centered on that conviction.
